I am so glad that I took the extra time to research middle east frame drums extensively when I decided to upgrade my Meinl Bendir. I had not heard of hornbeam wood but it turns out it is the traditional wood for these instruments and is one of the top hardwoods available. It is also gorgeous and seems to have a positive impact on the sound. I debated vs. the same brand's natural skin head but ultimately decided in my Virginia environment that the synthetic head would be more practical. No complaints on the sound or the feel! Ergonomically, this is also an amazing frame drum. Highly recommended! I just wish they made a true bendir version; this one is essentially a tar as it hasn't the snare-style strings, but I suppose one could add those on one's own. None of the middle east vendors seem to offer such models.
