Sound Sample of the doumbek

Pros and Cons Turkish Doumbek

Turkish Doumbek is one of those few musical instruments that can generate a wide variety of musical notes, subtle variations and crispy sounds. These are some its musical features that are unlikely to be found in other types of Doumbek and this is what has helped it to get enormous level of popularity among both audience and music practitioners. The shape of Turkish Doumbek is somewhat different that of its Egyptian counterpart. Though you will not be able to found any major difference between them, a careful study would help you to pinpoint the actual difference. Turkish Doumbek comes up with exposed head whereas the Egyptian Doumbeks are noted for their rounded head. Currently people are using metal bolts in the outward rim of Turkish doumbek for giving it a different look and for enhancing the quality of its sound.

Doumbek Pros

  • One of the major advantages of playing Turkish doumbek is that it is extremely lightweight. Therefore, you would have to feel the pain of holding it even for a long time.
  • Turkish Doumbek is comparatively less expensive than the Egyptian one and this is certainly one of its unique advantages over its counterpart.
  • This type of doumbek is best for practicing the famous finger snapping technique, which has almost become synonymous with its name.
  • Its metal blots are widely used for tying it with rope for slinging it over the musician shoulder.

Doumbek Cons

  • Its metal bolts are somewhat troubling for the beginners. Fingers can be hurt badly because of these metal bolts while practicing this doumbek.
  • Some people find Turkish Doumbek too lightweight to play it properly. If the leaner or the practitioner fails to hold it properly in his hand or in his shoulder, the drum can turn away from him after being hit.

Though Turkish doumbek has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, it is undoubtedly one of the best musical instruments that are ever invented by mankind. Just try it and get lost into the world of music.
